Again there’s too much to say about George and Ira and that special perfect time that made them. I saw Michael Tilson Thomas at the Barbican conduct a tribute to George on the 50th anniversary of his death in 1987.
The same week Fred Astaire died (famed for his dancing chops but Irving Berlin’s favourite singer)
I remember the poor clarinetist not quite managing that rhapsodic launch but the pressure would have been unbearable.
Fifty years ago today I was at art college. If I was 70 at the Barbican, George would have died the day before yesterday. What a fantastic talent.
